Home Depot managers lead DIY workshops for children with autism

December 04, 2014
A group of Home Depot Canada store and district managers from across the GTA visited both Brampton locations of ErinoakKids Centre for Treatment and Development yesterday to share their do-it-yourself skills with children with autism.

As part of Home Depot’s commitment to give back to its communities, the 16 volunteers brought easy-to-assemble kits for the more than 50 children in the ErinoakKids autism services program at the Brampton sites. Together, the volunteers and children built and decorated flower planters, bird and bug houses, lawn tractors and tool boxes. The volunteers also helped decorate the sites for the holidays, contributing Christmas trees and ornaments, and presented $3,000 in Home Depot gift cards to ErinoakKids.

“These interactive workshops at our Howden Boulevard and Torbram Road locations were a unique and delightful experience for the children in our autism services program,” said Bridget Fewtrell, President and CEO of ErinoakKids. “We thank Home Depot for its generosity and all the volunteers who used their skills in such a special way, creating wonderful memories with the children.”

About ErinoakKids Centre for Treatment and Development
ErinoakKids Centre for Treatment and Development is Ontario’s largest Children’s Treatment Centre, serving more than 14,500 children and youth annually who have a wide range of physical and developmental disabilities, autism, communication disorders, as well as children who are blind and/or deaf. Our mission is to help our clients achieve optimal levels of independence, learning, health and well-being. Serving Halton, Peel, and Dufferin, ErinoakKids has approximately 650 staff and 11 sites from which we provide a comprehensive array of assessment, medical, therapy and support services that help children and their families. In 2011 the Ontario Government through the Ministry of Children and Youth Services approved our redevelopment project to enable ErinoakKids to consolidate and replace our existing patchwork of leased and largely inaccessible facilities into three larger sites which will be ideally situated for easy access within our catchment area. These new facilities will more than double our treatment space and are being designed specifically for the care of children and youth with special needs. The new facilities are expected to open in 2017.
