New treatment centre for kids with disabilities to meet growing demand in Ontario

February 19, 2016
ErinoakKids, the largest of Ontario’s 20 community-based children’s treatment centres, is building new space for the first time in 40 years to meet the growing demand for therapy, medical and support services for kids with disabilities and special needs.

Today, ErinoakKids celebrated the start of construction on a new Oakville location as part of a multi-site project supported by the Ministry of Children and Youth Services that will replace 11 outgrown and outdated facilities with three new buildings – one in Oakville, another in Mississauga and a third in Brampton. The sites will bring therapy, medical and support services under one roof for children with disabilities and special needs, so that they receive the care they need when they need it most.

“Today, ErinoakKids celebrates a remarkable milestone in a long journey that began with a dream to provide children and youth with disabilities access to the care and resources they need to achieve lifelong success,” said ErinoakKids President and CEO Bridget Fewtrell. “As demand for our services increases by 10 percent annually, it is critical we address the needs of the more than 15,000 children and youth we serve each year by providing new space, tailored to meet their needs in their home communities.”

Located at 2000 Glenorchy Dr., next to the new Oakville Hospital, the 79,000 square foot facility will house:
  •  A controlled multisensory Snoezelen room for children with autism or developmental disabilities
  • A fully accessible playground for recreation therapy, physiotherapy and occupational therapy
  • 2 gyms
  • 20 treatment rooms
  • An adapted fitness facility
  • 2 therapeutic playrooms
  • A Family Resource Centre for staff and families
  • A Youth Drop-In Centre, and
  • An audiology are for hearing aid fitting and dispensing
“Our Oakville facility was purposefully designed to give children and youth with disabilities the opportunity to achieve their developmental goals and build their confidence and self-worth,” said Meeta Bains, Chair, Board of Directors at ErinoakKids. “In doing so, we are helping these children grow to become active and contributing members of our communities.”

Construction of the new sites will enable ErinoakKids to consolidate its current patchwork of mostly leased and retrofitted office and commercial spaces. The facilities will offer a variety of services, including: physiotherapy, occupational therapy, autism services, speech and language services, infant hearing and screening services, vision services, and recreation therapy.

“ErinoakKids new Centre for Treatment and Development is a major step forward, giving children, youth and their families’ convenient access to special needs services,” said Minister of Children and Youth Services Tracy MacCharles. “This updated facility will be a cornerstone of care in Oakville, and joins a legacy of children’s treatment facility projects that our government is proud to support.”

The cost of design and construction for the Oakville site is $47 million, which will be provided by the Ministry of Children and Youth Services. The Ministry is investing a total of $163 million for the three sites, and providing funding to support the acquisition of land, project planning and overall project management. ErinoakKids is raising $20 million – $15 million for therapy/treatment program equipment, and $5 million to support specialized services through its $20 million In My Dreams capital campaign.

Official construction of the Oakville facility is set to be complete in early 2017. The new site is scheduled to open in spring 2017.
