News Release: New ErinoakKids facility to be located in northeast Brampton

September 13, 2013
(Mississauga ON) – Today ErinoakKids Centre for Treatment and Development announced that its new Brampton facility will be located at the intersection of McVean Drive and Castlemore Road in northeast Brampton. The facility is one of three to be constructed as part of the much-needed and long-anticipated ErinoakKids redevelopment project, approved in 2011 by the Ontario Ministry of Children and Youth Services (MCYS) and overseen by Infrastructure Ontario (IO).
The project will enable ErinoakKids to consolidate its current patchwork of mostly leased and retrofitted office and commercial spaces — long since outgrown — into three larger sites designed specifically for the care of children and youth with disabilities and special needs. The ErinoakKids project is the largest in MCYS history and the first multi-site build of a Children’s Treatment Centre in the province.
In addition to serving Brampton clients and their families, the new location will enable ErinoakKids to better serve clients in the northern part of its catchment area, which covers 3,707 square kilometers and includes Peel Region, Dufferin County and Halton Region.
At approximately 121,000 square feet and situated on 8 acres, the new Brampton facility will be the largest of the three new ErinoakKids sites. Features of the Brampton facility will include:
  • 26-bed respite facility, providing respite care for children who are medically fragile/technologically dependent, have complex care requirements, behavioural challenges  and/or autism
  • Warm-water therapy pool
  • Snoezelen room, providing a controlled sensory environment for children with developmental disabilities or autism
  • 2 fully accessible playgrounds for recreation therapy, physiotherapy and occupational therapy
  • Adapted fitness facility to enable children and youth to use a variety of fitness equipment to build strength, endurance and flexibility
  • 25 treatment rooms
  • Youth drop-in centre
The Ministry of Children and Youth Services is fully funding the construction of the new buildings. ErinoakKids has embarked on a $20-million campaign to equip the new facilities.
Construction is expected to begin in 2014 and be completed in 2016.
ErinoakKids Centre for Treatment and Development is Ontario’s largest Children’s Treatment Centre, serving more than 13,500 children and youth annually who have physical and developmental disabilities, autism, communication disorders, blindness/low vision and hearing loss. Our mission is to help our clients achieve optimal levels of independence, learning, health and well-being. Serving Halton, Peel, Dufferin — and, for some services, Waterloo and Wellington — ErinoakKids has approximately 600 staff and 10 sites from which we provide a comprehensive array of assessment, medical, therapy and support services that help children and their families.
