Applied Behaviour Analysis
Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) is a scientific and evidence-based approach for working with individuals with ASD, and is the approach that underpins autism services at ErinoakKids. ABA uses the principles of human behaviour and focuses on the relationship between environment, behaviour, and consequences. Changes to behaviour with ABA are accomplished by increasing desirable skills or decreasing undesirable ones.
Therapists, parents, educators and others can use the principles of ABA to:
Help prevent challenging behaviours
Increase positive behaviours
Provide structure and routine
Help build skills
Help achieve independence
Increases ability to transfer skills in different settings
Understanding ABA Language:
Reinforcement – Motivating a child
Prompting – Providing Assistance
Fading – Reducing Assistance
Generalization – Transferring Skills
Antecedent Strategies – Proactive strategies implemented before the behaviour develops
Functional Behaviour Assessment – Determining the reason for a behaviour
