Kaitlyn Wilcox 

ErinoakKids is honoured to collaborate with Indigenous artist Kaitlyn Wilcox (she/they) to create new murals that celebrate Indigenous stories, cultures and perspectives, bringing greater representation and visibility to every ErinoakKids site. 

This initiative aligns with our DEI Action Plan to create more inclusive spaces and support meaningful learning opportunities for staff, clients, families and visitors. 

Artist Biography

Kaitlyn Wilcox is a mixed Bodéwadmi Two Spirit artist, social worker, and researcher born and raised in Mississauga. Their family comes from Beausoleil First Nation and Moose Deer Point First Nation. Their practice spans beadwork, painting, sewing, and textile design, guided by Spirit, kin, and ancestral memory. Rooted in Bodéwadmi teachings and matriarchal knowledge, their work explores Indigenous identity, belonging, kinship, and cultural reclamation. Kaitlyn creates work that honours family, land, water, and the responsibilities carried across generations.

You Are Sacred

You Are Sacred illustrates a landscape that moves from moonlit night into the light of day, reflecting the cycles of change, renewal, and life. Across the piece, a Canadian goose, raven, swan, moose, fish, and squirrels move through the changing light. Two waterways flow around Turtle Island, represented by the turtle’s back from the Creation Story. At its centre, seven community members gather around a medicine wheel, honouring the Seven Generations. An Elder, children, people who use mobility devices, communication tools, and sensory supports, and their support persons come together in a circle of belonging. Rooted trees, grasses, soil, trilliums, the Niagara Escarpment, and the Four Sacred Medicines connect the community to these lands.

This work honours the sacred gifts held within each of us and the ways our gifts contribute to the strength of community. It invites reflection on belonging, interdependence, and our responsibilities to one another and to Creation. This mural reminds us that we each have a place, a purpose, and something sacred to carry forward.
