James' Story

“the best part about Respite is not just the fun James has when he’s there, but the confidence I feel leaving him. He is safe and in really good hands, what more can I ask for?”

James is currently 11 years old. His family has relied on Respite, a critical service offered at ErinoakKids, since he was James five, about a year after they moved to Mississauga from Toronto. Christina, James's mom, remembers how grateful she was when she discovered a service like Respite existed in the Peel region, after leaving the supports, care team and specialized programs they accessed since James was born behind in Toronto.

James, who has Autism Spectrum Disorder and an Acquired Brain Injury, enjoys the wide range of activities offered at ErinoakKids’ Respite Centre, including crafts, plenty of outdoor time, and relaxing in the Snoezelen room. James has been going to Respite for 6 years. Christina thinks this "really says something" about the quality of Respite, noting that they use the services multiple times a year. Beyond the fun activities, James receives essential services that help him thrive. Christina noted that “the one-to-one support is the best thing about Respite," and that James receives other fundamental services like PT and OT at ErinoakKids.

The program's ability to provide a safe and therapeutic environment has been crucial. Christina shared that over the years, James has “exhibited aggressive behaviour." She feels confident sending James to Respite, because she knows that the staff on site are trained in behaviour management, and have the tools and empathy to keep him safe. She says “the best part about Respite is not just the fun James has when he’s there, but the confidence I feel leaving him. He is safe and in really good hands, what more can I ask for?”
