Before attending the Independent Living Program (ILP) at ErinoakKids, independence was merely a concept, something RJ classified as "living on your own" and "managing responsibilities." But over ten days this past summer, RJ finally felt what true independence meant. 

The program was a safe and supportive space for him to practice adulthood. RJ spent the summer learning essential life skills, from mastering basic meal preparation (“without setting off the smoke alarm” in his words) to figuring out how to budget, to envisioning his life beyond high school. 

But one moment of pure freedom stood out for RJ: sailing. Out on the water, steering the sailboat and feeling the wind, RJ experienced independence in its purest form. It was a powerful reminder that independence is not just about doing things alone, but about having the confidence to try, and the necessary supports to succeed. 

 
Because of programs like ILP, RJ now feels ready to tackle his next big goal: university. During goal day at ILP, he had the opportunity to visit the University of Waterloo. After that visit, he could finally, truly imagine himself there.
